From June 1st 2017, all mixtures (plant protection products included) placed on the market have to be labelled in accordance with the Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation.
The CLP Regulation is now the only legislation that applies in the classification and labelling of both substances and mixtures. This marks the end of the transitional period for mixtures. Only hazardous chemicals carrying labels with the CLP pictograms can be supplied from 1 June onwards.
Companies must classify, label and package their hazardous chemicals appropriately before placing them on the market. If suppliers still have products on their shelves with labels following the requirements of the previous legislation, they must now make sure that the products are either no longer placed on the market or re-classified and re-labelled in accordance with CLP.
The purpose of the classification and labelling of hazardous chemicals is to ensure a high level of protection of health and the environment, as well as the free movement of substances, mixtures and articles. It is based on the Globally Harmonised System, agreed in the UN.
A hazard pictogram is an image on a label that includes a warning symbol and specific colours intended to provide information about the damage a particular substance or mixture can cause to our health or the environment. The new pictograms are in the shape of a red diamond with a white background, and will replace the old orange square symbols which applied under the previous legislation.
